what is permanent Mold casting?

Permanent mold casting (also known as gravity permanent mold) applies molds made out of tool steel that create high-quality aluminum parts at a low cost.
Mold life is typically 100,000 pieces or more compared to sand casting that uses a new mold for every part. Mold costs are kept low because castings are poured under gravity as opposed to being injected under tons of pressure as with die casting.

the advantage of permanent mold

  • Affordable tooling and competitive part cost
  • Excellent dimensional tolerances (+/- 0.015”)
  • Superior mechanical properties
  • Excellent surface finishes (RMS of 200-300)
  • Effective use of sand cores that create internal cavities and undercuts within the casting

is permanent mold right for you?

In one of our recent blog posts, we compare permanent mold casting to other processes including sand casting, fabrication, and high pressure die casting to help you determine which process is best for your needs.

know when to transition from sand casting to permanent Mold

Permanent mold is ideal if your part quantities are rising and if you’re looking to produce a higher quality part that achieves tighter tolerances and dimensional stabilities. While sand casting provides many benefits including low tooling costs, it’s worth knowing when you should make the switch.

your design concepts brought to life

Our design engineers will help you:
  • Turn your design concept into a casting.
  • Re-engineer and enhance an existing design.
  • Solve a design challenge.
  • Convert from die casting or sand casting to permanent mold casting.
  • Convert from a fabrication or machined component to permanent mold casting.
Our design engineers partner with our customers to improve your part’s design and manufacture it to your exact specifications. We use solidification software that runs a simulation on any casting design. Our software predicts what types of defects to expect, giving us the ability to refine and improve your part before we even start production.
We deliver the design support you need to evolve your casting from concept to finished product.
For more information on our engineering design services contact us today at 1.204.663.9142 or request a free quote.
Software We Use:
  • CAD – NX11
  • Solidification Modeling – MagmaSoft
File Types We Accept (in order of preference):
  • Native NX
  • xt_Parasolid
  • iges/igs
  • stp

cnc machining

KEY MACHINING CAPABILITIES UNDER ONE ROOF.
Whether your product needs milling, turning, or any other CNC machining process, our expertise and equipment will manufacture it to your exact specifications. We have a variety of horizontal and vertical machining centers as well as CNC lathes for round components.
CNC HORIZONTAL MACHINING CENTER CELLDecreased customer lead time is a direct result of our world-class CNC horizontal machining center cell that produces high-quality parts at a swift rate.
Our horizontal machining center cell:
  • Includes a 24-pallet system that requires no fixture preparation. Each pallet can hold up to four fixtures – this means we can run up to 96 different jobs at once.
  • Replaces fixtures in just one to three minutes versus one to three hours when replacing fixtures manually. With this free time, we perform value-added tasks.
These benefits, through the use of our machining center cell, give us the flexibility to manufacture any volume and a high variety of components at a competitive cost – allowing us to quickly respond and adjust to customers’ needs.

quality

Before greenlighting production, we’ll measure your part and verify its dimensions with our coordinate measuring machine. We can provide reports upon request. In some instances, when our customers require 100% inspection of their part components, we’ll provide dimensional reports for every part.

We apply high-quality surface coatings that meet your expectations

Our experience in the coating industry gives us the ability to determine cost-effective processes, meet your exact specifications, and improve the performance of your parts.
Our team will work with you to determine your part’s coating requirements including non-stick, abrasion resistant, corrosion or rust resistant, dry lubricated, or food grade.
We coat parts from small manufacturing companies to major OEM’s including Case New Holland, Bobcat, Raymond Corporation, and Price Industries.
We apply high-performance specialty coatings including:
  • Polyester Powder
  • Teflon® and Xylan® (PTFE, PFA, FEP, ETFE)
  • Halar® (ECTFE)
  • Kynar® (PVDF)
  • Rilsan® (nylon)
  • FBE (fusion bond epoxy)

Design for Manufacturability

Metal Casting Series

Design for Manufacturability, Metal Casting Series, DEC Industries
Design for Manufacturability is the engineering practice of designing products in such a way that they are easy to manufacture. The concept exists in almost all engineering disciplines but the implementation differs widely depending on the manufacturing technology. DFM describes the process of designing or engineering a product in order to facilitate the manufacturing process in order to reduce its manufacturing costs. DFM will allow potential problems to be fixed in the design phase, which is the least expensive place to address them. Other factors can affect the manufacturability, such as material, the form of the raw material, dimensional tolerances, and secondary processing such as finishing and machining.
